Wow! What a treat coming to Bynum!
The Bulltown Strutters are a Durham–based community band known for turning any event into a lively, participatory celebration rooted in New Orleans musical traditions.
At their core, the group is a New Orleans–style brass band, inspired by Second Line parade culture—the festive street processions where musicians lead crowds through dancing, singing, and spontaneous celebration.
Musically, they blend:
*Traditional New Orleans jazz standards
*Funk and modern influences
*Playful, crowd-friendly arrangements (sometimes even mashups or localized lyrics)
A defining feature of the band is its large, flexible lineup—often 16–20+ performers—with a big horn section, percussion, and multiple vocalists. Their size and instrumentation give them a powerful, parade-ready sound that works just as well on a stage as it does marching through the streets.
Their origins trace back to 2010 in Durham, when a small group assembled for a ceremonial performance and quickly evolved into a regular band as demand for their style grew. In performance, they’re less about passive listening and more about participation!
The Bulltown Strutters are less a traditional band and more a mobile party—a joyful, brass-driven collective that brings the spirit of New Orleans street music to North Carolina with a distinctly local, community-centered twist.
The popular Bynum Front Porch Summer Music Series happens on warm summer evenings from 7:00–8:30 PM out at the old Bynum General Store.
The shows are FREE, though we do pass the hat to help take care of the musicians who share their songs with us. There’s always a food truck parked outside, and the whole thing feels less like a concert and more like neighbors gathering. Kids running around barefoot, folks leaning back in lawn chairs, and the sound of music drifting out across the Haw River valley.
Bring a chair if you like, or use one of ours, we’ve got plenty. Parking is free and easy in the field next door or down at the Bynum ball field. Just a couple simple house rules: no alcohol and no pets, please. Come on out, grab some supper and/or soft drinks & ice cream, settle in, and enjoy a sweet summer evening with the community.
Come rock with us.
No alcohol or pets, please; thanks!
