Mad Crush at Bynum Front Porch 7:00-8:30

  • Bynum Front Porch 950 Bynum Road Bynum, NC 27228 United States (map)

Mad Crush is an indie folk/rock “supergroup” based in North Carolina, particularly associated with the Carrboro/Chapel Hill music scene. The band is known for blending storytelling, theatrical concepts, and melodic songwriting into a kind of narrative-driven musical experience.

At its core, Mad Crush centers on songwriters John Elderkin and Joanna Sattin, whose vocals often play off each other in a conversational, almost dramatic style—like two characters working through relationships, doubts, and everyday life.

Musically, their sound leans toward acoustic-driven indie folk and pop, with touches of classic rock influence. Critics have described them as a mix between retro British rock (like The Kinks) and modern Americana songwriting.

The full lineup has included musicians from several established NC bands, contributing to their “supergroup” label. Their instrumentation often features acoustic guitar, violin, percussion, and electric guitar, creating a layered but still intimate sound.

Overall, Mad Crush stands out in the North Carolina music scene for:

Narrative, character-driven songwriting
Male–female vocal interplay
A blend of indie folk, pop, and classic rock influences
A conceptual, almost theatrical approach to albums and performances

The popular Bynum Front Porch Summer Music Series happens on warm summer evenings from 7:00–8:30 PM out at the old Bynum General Store.

The shows are FREE, though we do pass the hat to help take care of the musicians who share their songs with us. There’s always a food truck parked outside, and the whole thing feels less like a concert and more like neighbors gathering. Kids running around barefoot, folks leaning back in lawn chairs, and the sound of music drifting out across the Haw River valley.

Bring a chair if you like, or use one of ours, we’ve got plenty. Parking is free and easy in the field next door or down at the Bynum ball field. Just a couple simple house rules: no alcohol and no pets, please. Come on out, grab some supper and/or soft drinks & ice cream, settle in, and enjoy a sweet summer evening with the community.

Come rock with us.

No alcohol or pets, please; thanks!
