Mary Johnson Rockers and the Spark

Don't miss this year's season opener for the Bynum Front Porch Friday Night Music Series!  Mary Johnson Rockers is her name, not a band. But with the Spark behind her, she delivers a great, roving Americana sound with pipes to spare. Ranging from soft twang with impeccable harmonies to driving rock rhythms full of late-night swagger, Mary’s music draws in fans of indie, folk and country alike.

Durham Ukulele Orchestra

The Durham Ukulele Orchestra is a genre busting ensemble whose love for music is rivaled only by the love they have for their favorite little instrument. Skillfully blending selections from the great American songbook, the best of classic rock, and a bit of the indie-alternative scene, the Durham Ukulele Orchestra has fashioned a sound that is both unique and foot-stompingly entertaining. So if the only thing a ukulele reminds you of is tiptoeing through the tulips, come let the Durham Ukulele Orchestra give you a new point of reference.

Holland Brothers
7 pm to 9 pm

When twin brothers Mark and Michael Holland sing harmony, they get your attention. They then keep it with a fine display of blues harp, acoustic slide guitar, and thumbpicking 12-string guitar that form the basis of a memorable and entertaining show. Similar to the Piedmont songsters of old, The Holland Bros from North Carolina play a variety of old-time folk, country and blues music that includes choice covers and inspired original songwriting. Drawing inspiration from Charlie Poole to Charlie Patton, the Holland Bros continue to garner praise and gain new fans daily.

Chapel Hill's Rootzie provides a rattle of rock and roll, a jolt of jazz, a burst of the blues, a cut or two of country, grand moments of gospel, a blast of bluegrass, and roots reggae revelry.

The Tan and Sober Gentlemen

The Tan and Sober Gentlemen draw upon Irish and Appalachian roots music to create the basis for their sound. Mixed with punk enthusiasm, three-to-five-piece harmonies, and raw energy, Tan and Sober creates unique, exciting music they term "Irish punk-grass."

His experience and dedication to his craft allows him to assemble the perfect show for any occasion or environment. A consummate performer, Tim entertains fans of all ages with his easygoing, down-to-earth manner and multi-instrumental talents.

Rooster Logic

Rooster Logic’s music is a fun and funky blend of original songs and unexpected covers that transcend genres.  The Chatham County, NC based outfit mixes together the sounds of Memphis soul, garage pop, blues, folk and rock 'n' roll into a crisp sound full of lush harmonies, clever lyrics and pop hooks.  Vocally rich and musically versatile, their frequent odd turns follow their own brand of logic.

The Outliers

As the name implies, The Outliers is a different type of band. The band formed out of the respect for traditional American music but a love for genres spanning from reggae to Delta blues and a belief that music can change, become new and still evoke the deep ancient tones within. The Outliers are pushing limits, reaching back in time, and creating an unexpected acoustic experience each time they take the stage.

The Paper Crowns

The Paper Crowns make two piece acoustic music sound huge. They are stomping on drums while they are plucking strings and singing harmonies often all at the same time. The Paper Crowns deliver the emotional spectrum from sweet and heartbreaking earnest ballads to barn burning gypsy raving conga frenzied sweaty dance tunes.

Nikki Talley is a hardworking, energetic, mountain girl with a big voice. She is one half of a full time touring husband and wife duo based out of Asheville, NC contributing acoustic guitar, clawhammer banjo & of course her trademark stunning vocals.

City Folk

City Folk is an acoustic folk group that plays their own original compositions as well as music spanning from acoustic contemporary folk to country folk/rock. Originally based in Washington, D.C., but now residing in North Carolina, the group consists of Jane Muldoon-Smith (lead vocals, guitar, and mandolin), along with husband Peter Smith (lead and background vocals, lead 6 and 12 string guitars, mandolin, and guitar synthesizer) and their daughter, Joanna, on upright bass.

At the heart of Grits & Soul is Anna Kline & John Looney. Their collaboration forges a powerful connection between hard-driving bluegrass, barroom honky tonk, Celtic, Southern gospel, and slow-burning blues. Anna & John have a dynamic musical chemistry that blends seamless harmonies with a shared sensibility of stirring melodies and powerful story lines.

Matt Phillips

Matt Phillips is a soulful artist that strives to make music people can get behind. Based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, this young performer and songwriter pens songs with folk and soul roots as deep as the cracks in his weathered acoustic. Whether he’s leading a 7-piece band with a huge, sly-jazzy sound or just flying solo with nothing more than his voice, guitar and the occasional harmonica solo – you can’t help but bob your head. With nearly 300 shows already under his belt and two releases paving the way, Matt is proving himself a confident and unique young performer with a very bright future ahead.

The Bluegrass Experience
7 pm to 9 pm

The Bluegrass Experience has been a vital force in the North Carolina/Southeastern Bluegrass scene for over 30 years.  Since being named the World’s Champion Bluegrass Band in 1972, the group has performed professionally throughout the eastern half of the United States and has appeared on many major festivals, done numerous college concerts, recorded 3 albums and appeared at The Finnish National Folk Festival. Members have worked or recorded with some of the greats of the genre including: Bill Monroe, Chubby Wise, Bobby Hicks, Jimmy Mills, Roland White, Wilma Lee Cooper, Gene Wooten and many others.
