The Paper Crowns

"The Paper Crowns have this aura of honesty in their music that’s genuine, easy to grasp, yet also not a complete giveaway." (Waleed Rashidi - IE Weekly)
The honesty found between Spiro and Nicole Nicolopoulos of the Paper Crowns draws from the great duo/couples of the past and present: Johnny Cash and June Carter, Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks.  It is the kind of honest connection where the rest of the world seems to disappear while they’re playing and singing to each other. Their musical chemistry is flavored with Appalachian folk and bluegrass, Dixieland melodies, delta blues, acid rock, murder ballads, folk and Southern Gospel.  Nicole and Spiro’s vocal harmonies and instrumentation sound big like a four piece band yet always honors their intimacy and rawness as a duo.
California born and raised Nicole met Okinawa born Spiro in California where they were both hustling in the clubs of the Los Angeles music scene.  Spiro had a reputation as a musical expeditionary pulling together disparate genres, glitch noises and live looping in projects that saw his music played around the world in global commercial campaigns and in major festivals across America.  Nicole was a natural front woman playing in a rock power trio radiating genuine charisma and a style that garnered critical acclaim and a fiercely loyal Southern California fan base.  They found a musical chemistry with one another bound for innovation yet firmly planted in American roots music.  They wrote and recorded their debut album at their home studio and quickly won the IE Weekly reader’s poll for Best Country Artist. (The IE is Southern California’s Inland Empire covering three counties with over 14,000,000 residents.) Media attention to the Paper Crowns’ songs and lyrics earned them comparisons to The Band, Robert Hunter (Grateful Dead), and the Civil Wars.  Not a duo to rest on their laurels, the Paper Crowns hit the road playing over 140 shows a year.  Nicole and Spiro’s personal connection became official when they married in September of 2013.  In August of 2014 they made the trek with their dog Walter from Los Angeles, CA to the mountains of Asheville, NC where they now call home.  They tour the Southeast extensively playing over 150 shows a year.
Collectively, they have performed at events such as Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, Summer Meltdown, Baja Bash, The House of Blues, B.B. King's Blues Club, The Sawdust Festival,  Pappy & Harriet's, and shared billings with many acts including Tom Petty, Bonnie Raitt, Buddy Guy, Radiohead, My Morning Jacket, ALO, and Phil Lesh.
The Paper Crowns have been featured on Dead Show Of the Month, Vinyl Hours Radio, PE Live with Vanessa Franko, Local Color Live WNCW, The WDVX Blue Plate Special, 880 The Revolution, Asheville FM, WBTV Charlotte and 98.1 The River.
The Paper Crowns are currently touring the South, finding inspiration in their Appalachian home, and recording the follow up to their debut album, "See You Tonight”.
